Membership in an arts organization is not just for artists; it is for everyone. These organizations are open to the public at large and to businesses that wish to support the community. Through membership contributions, in part, arts organizations are able to provide venues for visual and performing artists to display their talents and are able to establish arts education programs. This became evident to me with my exposure to the Chowan Arts Council (CAC).
When my wife and I first visited the area about four years ago one of the first places we stopped was the Chowan Arts Council. We were really impressed by the gallery and shop and the variety and quality of work displayed there. It amazed me that a small community had such great talents. Upon returning to stay a year later, we joined the CAC and I had the opportunity to take advantage of the workshops being offered. I signed up for the beginner’s Stained Glass workshop which I enjoyed very much. Also, my wife has had the opportunity to display her photography at the gallery.
Since that time I have become active in the CAC and find it a rewarding experience. I feel that my membership in the CAC, in some small way, helps people to pursue and enjoy their artistic pursuits.
