The Chowan Arts Council and Edenton-Chowan Schools will again team up to bring three weeks of artist residency programs to the elementary, middle and high schools. Selected classes at each level of the school system will work with one of the Residents for a week in the upcoming year.
Silver Trout Productions
D.F. Walker Elementary School
Susana and Timmy Abell combine their unique talents to offer dynamic and highly engaging performances centered around a repertoire of unforgettable original songs and stories.
Susana, the previous CAC Executive Director, is excited to return to Edenton to work once again with the children of our community. Timmy and Susanna educate the students to explore a wide spectrum of creative options for expression, including story telling, song writing, and puppetry. Students will learn to identify and implement the essential ingredients found in effective stories and become inspired and confident in their ability to express their own stories.
There will also be a public performance for the entire family to enjoy.
Phillip Shabazz
Chowan Middle School
Phillip Shabazz is a poet, writer, and arts educator whose work engages issues of community, race, and culture in America. His writing expresses diverse points of view, from poems about family and friends challenged by the problems in life, to the celebration of human possibilities.
Arts presenters have called him "one of the most inspiring individuals in the arts." In an effort to get students excited about creative writing, Shabazz encourages them to be empowered by their own words and expression. Teachers have commented, "His methods succeed in teaching students how to use poetry as a tool of learning and communication."
* Residencies, as always, are contingent with funding from the North Carolina State Arts Council. This year we hope to bring the residents for two week at the Elementary and Middle School levels to work with more students.
